On Wednesday 19th July MFC also brings you the Dragon Café in the City project in collaboration with Shoe Lane Library and the City of London. Join us for a fantastic mix of events online and in person!

12:15pm (30 mins): Laughter Therapy

We all enjoy a good laugh. Did you know that laughing can help relieve stress, release endorphins (our happy hormone) and lower cortisol (stress hormone)? Take a break with Patricia Byrne who will lead the laughing in this energising session designed to lift the mood.

1pm (60 mins): Cyanotypes in the City

Join artist Vanessa Lawrence on the sunny side of the street as we create beautiful blue cyanotype sunshine prints.  

Create cyanotype prints of natural forms and found objects and watch them develop, often with fascinating & surprising results.

Inspired by the work of 19th century botanical artist, and photographer Anna Atkins; the first person to illustrate a book with photographic images.  Materials provided. No experience needed.

2pm (60mins): Paint and Relax: Drop In!

Feeling inspired after the cyanotypes workshop? - stay on; or drop in for this relaxed, self-led painting session with watercolours.  Materials provided. No booking required.

6pm (45 mins): Qi Gong

Combining slow graceful movements with mental concentration, this ancient Chinese practise is said to help improve posture, strength, and respiratory function. 

With Tony from Balance Garden. No experience needed and no need to have attended previous workshops. Wear loose comfortable clothes. Last of 5 series of workshops.

Reenergise your day with 20 minutes of stretching with Anya from Balance Garden. Wear your usual clothes. No experience necessary.

1 pm- Herbal Balms For The Skin (60 mins):

In this workshop, we’ll look at some of our favourite summertime herbs and learn how they can be used to keep our skin healthy through the summer, supporting our skin health. As part of the workshop, you’ll get to make an herb-infused skin balm to take home. With Nat from Hackney Herbal.

Places limited, booking is essential.

2pm (60 mins) - Paint and Relax: Drop in

Drop into Shoe Lane Library for a relaxed, self-led painting session. Practise techniques, work on your own project, or copy pieces from some of the library’s art books – feel free to get creative!

No registration needed, just come along and join us at Shoe Lane Library

6pm (45 mins) - Qi Gong:

Combining slow graceful movements with mental concentration, this ancient Chinese practise is said to help improve posture, strength, and respiratory function. With Tony from Balance Garden. No experience needed. Wear loose comfortable clothes. No need to have attended the previous sessions. 4th of 5 workshops.

12pm - 2pm: Clean Air & Mental Health:

Drop in and chat with City of London Environment team.

Find out how air pollution impacts our mental, physical and our planet’s health. Learn about air measures that make it easier for us to breathe clean air and what we can do to reduce our exposure to air pollution.

In Person at Shoe Lane Library

12:15pm (30 mins): Mindfulness

Take a break from the hustle and bustel with this guided meditation designed to calm the mind and reenergise your day.  With Victoria John, mindfulness teacher and actor.  

In person at Shoe Lane Library and Via Zoom!  

1pm (60 mins): Writing for Wellbeing

Focussing on writing about the natural world around us. In this relaxed workshop Lisa from Wordsmiths will guide you through structured writing activities and games to enable you to create and share a mixture of fictional and true stories based on your own experiences. Light-hearted and sociable session where participants of all abilities are welcome to try out creative writing.

2pm (90 mins): Paint and Relax: Drop in!

Stay on after the creative writing workshop; or drop in for this relaxed, self-led painting session. Be inspired by air or sky or choose your own theme.

12:15pm repeated at 12:45pm (20 mins) - Standing Stretch:

12:15pm (60mins) - Dan Dare - Pilot of the future

Focus on this fantasy Eagle comic hero of the 1950s. Discover links to Shoe Lane, and to at least one iconic, City leader, in mental health support. With references to the social and political transformations sweeping post war Britain.  With Lester Hillman, Writer & City Walks Guide.

Start and finish at Shoe Lane Library, with a short walk exploring nearby landmarks.

1:30pm (60 mins) - Comic Cartoons:

Fancy having a go at your own comic cartoons?  Illustrator & writer Richy k Chandler will show you how.  Drawing materials provided or bring your own. No experience needed.

3pm (60mins) Paint and Relax: Drop In!

Stay on or drop into Shoe Lane Library for a relaxed, self-led painting session. No registration needed and materials are provided.

5:30pm (60 mins) -Claymation:

Join us for this special end of the day workshop.

Start off by making a small character from coloured clay. Then bring to life with stop motion animation to make a short film clip.

No technical knowledge or experience needed, so chill out, pull up a chair and spend a creative hour with artist and animator Reza Ben Gazra.

Complimentary hot drinks & fruit will keep the munchies at bay.
