Monday 7th October

We are looking forward to welcoming you to The Dragon Café on Monday 7th October.

The Dragon Café will be in person at The Crypt at St Peters Church.

Join us in a celebration of Black History, creative writing, singing and a live musical performance.

12pm: Doors open:  Come on and join us for light refreshments, hot and cold drinks and healthy snacks available.

12:30pm – 2pm: Wordsmiths Creative Writing

In this fun workshop, attendees are guided through structured writing activities and games to enable them to create and share a mixture of fictional and true stories based on their own experiences.

The group setting allows each person to firstly build confidence by sharing work that they have created from nothing, and secondly to build empathy towards other people in their community by hearing their stories in their words. The goal is to enable a creative way to communicate and to understand thoughts and ideas whilst having fun.

2pm: Food Served:

This week we will be continuing with the MFC summer menu. We will be filling the summer menu with lots of fresh and healthy options. An assortment of Salads, Fruit, Fresh Breads, Olives, Finger Foods, and much more.

2:30pm – 3:20pm: Singing Group

In this session participants are invited to come together in celebration of the positive impact of singing and the voice. This session facilitated by our singing lead Vivien Ellis will be an energy filled journey through a mix of singing and vocal styles. From sea shanties to old English chants, choral favourites written by the singing group and some improvised rounds and soundscapes. There is something in this session for everyone.

3:40pm – 4:50pm: Uncovered Histories – the real story of multi-ethnic music hall.

Join author and heritage consultant S.I. (Steve) Martin for a journey through the bizarre beginnings of British minstrelsy in mid 1800s Vauxhall to the appearance of the world's most popular artists in Camberwell and Peckham in the early 1900s. Find out how Southwark and South London were at the centre of multi-ethnic music hall and theatre heritage.

5:pm – 5:45pm: Music Hall Days – A performance by Helen McDonald

Join us for a live performance featuring the soulful vocals of Helen McDonald, accompanied by the talented pianist Yul. Immerse yourself in the rich history of music hall, a beloved British entertainment tradition that owes much to the contributions of the Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities. Discover the vibrant energy and cultural fusion that shaped this iconic art form. Let the music transport you back in time and pay tribute to the legacy of those who paved the way.

S.I. Martin:

“Specialising in the fields of Black British history and literature, I work with museums, archives and the education sector to bring diverse histories to wider audiences. I have published five books of historical fiction and non-fiction for adult and teenage readers.

I founded the 500 Years of Black London walks nearly 20 years ago in response to the low profile given to the Black historical presence on the capital's streets. I have consistently encouraged and championed the provision of plaques, street names and street furniture to this end.

I have worked with and for the Black Cultural Archives, National Maritime Museum, the V&A, Tate Britain, London Metropolitan Archives, National Portrait Gallery, Horniman Museum, The National Archives, RAF Museum, Welcome Trust and many others”.

All are welcome and we look forward to welcoming you to The Crypt at St Peters. See you on Monday!
